Paul Michael: 1926-2011

It was with sadness that we learned of the death of actor Paul Michael this weekend, who had a memorable stint on Dark Shadows as the vengeful gypsy king Johnny Romano in 1969. Paul died peacefully at his home in Woodland Hills, California on July 8 aged 84.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he began his career as an opera singer, graduating to roles in several Broadway musicals, including Zorba and Man of La Mancha. His television work included appearances on General Hospital, Hill Street Blues and Frasier. In addition to a brief part in House of Dark Shadows, he was also seen in the films Masque of the Red Death and Pennies From Heaven.

For more than 23 years, Paul was the partner of Happy Days actress Marion Ross, with the couple acting together onstage up until last year. He is survived by two sons. To read a tribute by Ross' son Jim, click here.

RIP, Paul. In true DS fashion, it's fittingly weird that King Johnny Romano was the longtime beau of Mrs. Cunningham from "Happy Days". Did not know!...
